AI search visibility for architecture firms
Only 37.9% of the pages Google’s AI Overviews cited in March 2026 ranked in the top ten for the original query, down from about 76% in July 2025 (Ahrefs, 2 March 2026, a vendor study of about four million cited URLs). The pages that get cited answer one specific question with an explicit number. That is what we build for architecture firms, and this page sets out what the evidence supports, what it does not, and where the limits are.

What the evidence says works
Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet, that no special schema.org structured data is needed, and that both features may use query fan-out, meaning related searches run behind the scenes (Google Search Central, updated 10 December 2025). OpenAI says any public site can appear in ChatGPT search as long as it does not block OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI publisher FAQ). Beyond that, the evidence separates into tactics worth doing and tactics worth ignoring.
| Tactic | What the evidence says | Strength | What we do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Be indexed, snippet-eligible and open to AI crawlers | Required by Google (10 December 2025) and OpenAI | Official | Weekly indexation check; robots open to AI crawlers |
| Narrow pages that answer one sub-question | 37.9% of AIO-cited URLs ranked in the top ten in March 2026, from about 76% in July 2025 (Ahrefs, 2 March 2026) | Moderate; vendor dataset, method changed between studies | One page per question, with the answer in the first two sentences |
| Explicit statistics and quotations | Up to about 40% higher visibility in generative answers in a lab benchmark (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024) | Moderate; lab setting | Number, source and date in the opening lines, plus a quotable table |
| Mentions of the firm on other sites | Branded web mentions correlated 0.664 with AIO brand mentions across 75,000 brands (Ahrefs, 26 May 2025) | Moderate; correlational | Reddit answers, newsletters, podcasts and local press |
| Freshness | AI-cited URLs averaged 1,064 days old against 1,432 for organic results; ChatGPT favoured the newest pages (Ahrefs, 28 July 2025) | Moderate; varies by platform | Refresh on the data calendar; dates change only with the numbers |
What does not work as a citation lever
Schema markup. In a controlled test, Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added schema between August 2025 and March 2026 against about 4,000 matched controls. AI Overview citations fell 4.6%, a small but statistically significant decline, and the changes in AI Mode (+2.4%) and ChatGPT (+2.2%) were indistinguishable from zero (Ahrefs, 11 May 2026). We keep valid schema for rich results and accurate machine reading, and do not bill for it as an AI tactic.
The llms.txt file. SE Ranking found no effect on citation frequency across about 300,000 domains, as reported by Search Engine Journal, and Google’s John Mueller said in June 2025 that no AI system currently uses llms.txt (Search Engine Roundtable). If a proposal you are reading leads with schema and llms.txt, it is selling you the two tactics with the best evidence of no effect.
What we do each month
- Indexation first. Search Console and URL inspection on every new page, because Google’s AI features only draw on indexed, snippet-eligible pages (10 December 2025).
- One sourced page. A question your clients ask, answered with a number, its source and its date in the first two sentences, a quotable table, a named author and a note on how the page was made. Nothing is gated.
- A fixed set of prompts, checked by hand. We run the questions a homeowner in your market asks through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, and log whether your firm is cited, mentioned without a link, or absent, and who was cited instead. None of this can be observed automatically.
- Mentions. Where a Reddit thread asks the question your page answers, the founder answers it properly. Local newsletters, podcasts and journalists get a sourced number they can use, with your name on it.
- Refresh on the data calendar. When a source releases new figures, the page and its date change. When nothing has changed, the date does not move, because Google lists changing dates to seem fresh among its warning signs (creating helpful content, updated 5 October 2026).
The method is free. The getting cited by AI search playbook sets out every step above for a practice that wants to do it in-house. This page is the done-for-you version, included in the Growth plan on the pricing page, and we would rather you read the playbook first and call us second.
The honest limit
Being cited does not bring much traffic. In Pew Research Center’s browsing data from March 2025 (published 22 July 2025), users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits that showed an AI summary, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary on 1%. Citation shares are also volatile: BrightEdge, a vendor, found google.com accounted for 44.9% of AI Mode citations in September 2026. The value of a citation is that the firm’s name appears inside the answer a referred homeowner reads. That shows up as mentions and booked calls, so that is what we report.
What stands behind this page
This site is built the way we build client pages: every figure names its source and date, every page says how it was made, nothing is gated, and the research pages carry a last-verified date and a change log. We are running the prompt method above across US metros for a study of what AI search recommends to homeowners looking for an architect, and the results will be published with the prompts and dates stated, whatever they show. The guide on marketing a small architecture firm sets this service in the context of referrals, which still win most of the work.
